10 Reasons to Praise God

You know it’s good and right to praise the Lord. But, sometimes you just don’t feel like it! In that case, these 10 reasons to praise God will remind you of why God is worthy of praise in the first place.

Y’all, sometimes I just don’t feel like praising God.

If I pay too much attention to how I feel (sleepy, exhausted, achy, frustrated, etc.), or what’s going on in the world around me (chaos!), of course I don’t have any reasons to praise God. Why would I praise God for this sinful, fallen world?

You know what I mean. Everything is a mess, and there’s more to complain about or despair over than there is to rejoice about. (Or at least, it sure seems that way!).

It’s easy to ‘praise’ God when things are going fantastic. But, we have to remember that God is still GOOD, even when life is not. Just because we’re having a bad day (or year!), that doesn’t change who God is!

Why does God want us to praise Him?

The Bible tells us it’s good to praise God. And honestly, I really think it’s for our own good and not just because God delights in our praise! I mean, He definitely does desire to be praised, but there are so many benefits of praising God that we receive.

The major thing about worshiping God, is that it reminds us that HE IS GOD, and WE ARE HIS PEOPLE. He’s our Creator and our Provider, and for that simple reason, He is worthy of praise!

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
Worship the LORD with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the LORD is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.

So, in a nutshell, why do we praise God? Because He created us, we are His, and He cares deeply for us!

But still, I know it’s not easy. On those days when life is just kinda crummy, and distractions abound, it can be difficult to praise the Lord. At the moment I’m writing this, I have a trouble spot in my neck that’s causing pain and a headache. Do I want to praise God for that? Heck no.

But, I have a reason to praise the Lord that goes far beyond my present circumstances, to who He is and also what He has done for me before!

And I hope you’ll join me in that mindset, with these 10 reasons to praise God…

1) His Love endures forever!

This has got to be the #1 reason God is worthy of our praise. He loves us so much, that He sent His Only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Never mind all the time we spent ignoring Him, deliberately disobeying, etc. He STILL LOVES US! Who else do you know who could love all the inhabitants of planet earth so completely? Only God.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

2) His grace is amazing!

Likewise, our Lord’s capacity for forgiveness is never-ending. No matter what our weaknesses are, His grace and mercy are always sufficient. I think of all the reasons to worship God, this is my favorite!

But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)

3) He is sovereign over all!

No one knows ALL the mysteries of life, except God Himself. He’s Lord over the whole earth! So, when you feel out of control, or like you can’t possibly figure things out in this crazy world, praise God that He knows everything there is to know about you and your life, and He’s got you!

4) He’s the Original Creator!

Why does God deserve our praise? One big reason, is simply because He made everything—including all the things we enjoy. Do you love chocolate, as I do? God invented the cocoa bean. Do you marvel at the bright colors in a rainbow? God conceptualized and brought to life each color your eyes see. Humans may ‘create’, but really we’re only creating out of what God already gave us to work with. But God, He’s the original Creator who made EVERYTHING from scratch!

For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

5) He has the POWER to do anything and everything!

Just think about the endless POSSibilities of God’s ABilities. We have a billion reasons to praise God, because He is all-powerful and all-knowing. He can literally make anything happen! Of course, He’s not just going to wave a magic wand and grant our every desire… BUT, He does have the power to move those mountains that truly need moving. When you ask for God to move that mountain, praise Him whether or not He actually does move it. What happens when we praise God in difficult times, is that we learn to trust Him and wait for His answers to our prayers.

6) He is faithful!

Look at all the ways God has been with you thus far. And, as Matt Maher sings it, ‘if you’re still alive and breathing, praise the Lord!’. Scripture says the Lord will be with us always, and that He’s our ever-present help in times of trouble.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

7) He never changes!

One of the totally awesome reasons to praise God, is that He’s the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow! That means, He’ll continue to love and forgive and rescue you tomorrow, just like He has before. He’s not like us fickle humans, changing our minds all the time. If God says He loves you today, He will still love you tomorrow and the next day and the next.

Does he promise and not fulfill?

8) The beauty and majesty of His Creation is awe-inspiring!

The next time you’re really feeling down and unable to praise God, just take a walk outdoors, or if you can’t do that, look at photos of nature. There’s nothing like appreciating the warmth of sunshine, or the beauty of a flower, to inspire praise for God!

9) We are made in His image!

As the Psalmist puts it, we are fearfully and wonderfully made! God made us to be like Him, with inherent goodness, and the capacity to love and be loved. Praise God that, in spite of our sinful choices, we still have His goodness in us!

Then God said, “Let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness [not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness]; and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, and over the entire earth, and over everything that creeps and crawls on the earth.” So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.

10) His timing is perfect!

Praise God for His patience with us! He knows exactly what we need, when we need it… not a moment too soon or too late.

But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.

    I found this very helpful and encouraging…it meet me at a time when I found it difficult to praise God because of the circumstances at the moment…but this has encourage me to praise God regardless….
