In all the years that I’ve been Bible journaling, I’ve fallen into some sneaky traps…
...and I’ve also heard from many fellow Bible journalers, who’ve believed all kinds of lies and myths about journaling. Some are things that prevent people from even starting to journal in God’s Word, and others can hinder the depth of study that could otherwise be facilitated through journaling. So today, I’m here to set the record straight!
Have you fallen for any of these untruths?
Let’s find out!

5 Truths You MUST Know About Bible Journaling (Myths, Lies, and Misconceptions)
So, what are these big Bible journaling truths that you MUST know? Watch the video below for the full rundown, or keep scrolling to see the list of all five…
1) Bible journaling is NOT just about the art!
Yes, there IS art involved, but making pretty pictures is not the primary objective. Bible journaling is first and foremost about studying God’s Word through creativity! Art is the tool we use to aid our studies, not the end goal.
2) You don’t need specific supplies to journal!
Of course, as a crafty gal, I love some good art supplies. BUT, that being said, you don’t need a lot of supplies to journal. All you need is a heart seeking God through His Word, and something as simple as colored pens or pencils to write and create with. You could always add more supplies as you wish (or your budget allows), but it’s not a necessity. You can actually do a LOT with just colored pencils!

3) You don’t need specific skills to journal!
Just as you don’t need a lot of art supplies to Bible journal, you also don’t need any particular skills to begin. If you can finger paint or draw stick figures, and you can read and write, you can journal creatively in God’s Word! Of course, there are plenty of opportunities to learn new skills, like how to use stamps in Bible journaling, or how to paint a watercolor sunset, but you can jump right in with whatever you have.
Even if you think you have ZERO artistic talent, there are plenty of ways for non-artists to engage in Bible journaling!
4) Your Bible journaling is unique to you!
No two people are alike, and no two Bible journalers are alike either. Your journaling is primarily between you and God, and is unique as your fingerprints! So, don’t get stuck in a compare-and-despair trap of contrasting your journaling against someone else’s… it’s all about your relationship with God, and your unique journey, creative style, circumstances, challenges, etc.

5) Bible journaling does NOT have to perfect!
In fact, Bible journaling will never be perfect, because we humans aren’t perfect. But, I believe God still loves it when we engage deeply in His Word, and spend time with Him, even when we make mistakes, smudge the ink, spell the words wrong, or commit any number of other Bible journaling mishaps.
I hope these TRUTHS about Bible journaling have encouraged you, to boldly and fearlessly dive into God’s Word through creative study! If you want to journal, don’t ever let a perceived lack of skills, supplies, or artistic abilities prevent you from doing so.
