Ever since I discovered mixed media faith journaling a year ago, I’ve been enamored with it.
I’d been Bible journaling for a long time (nearly 10 years now), but I’d never considered journaling in a blank sketchbook. That is, until I saw Korin Sutherland (owner of Creative Worship Stamps) teach a video session on mixed media journaling. I was intrigued, and bought a blank journal soon after.
And I was blown away at how much I enjoyed it, and how beneficial it has been. Just a few of the things I have come to appreciate about mixed media faith journaling:
- It allows me to journal about a general faith topic, rather than one specific verse or Bible passage (as with Bible journaling).
- The thick paper of a mixed media journal has nearly unlimited capacity for paints and inks, whereas the paper in a journaling Bible is thin and requires special consideration.
- Some of my pages start out with no direction at all… I can just sling some paint on the page, see what transpires, and quite often I’ll go back later and add Bible verses, lists, or prayers. I don’t have to know what I’m doing at the beginning… God will lead me to write what’s needed at the right time.
Do any of these benefits resonate with you?

Perhaps you’ve thought about getting into Bible journaling, but you’ve hesitated because you felt uncomfortable journaling IN an actual Bible. Or, maybe you’re like me, and just wanting a supplement to Bible journaling… a different place to journal with God, where you can work through a variety of Bible topics, life situations, or personal struggles.
Either way, if you’re still reading, I imagine this faith journaling thing sounds as appealing to you as it did to me! If you want to know how to get started, let’s do this…
How to Start Mixed Media Faith Journaling
In the video tutorial below, I walk you through the basic supplies you’ll need to get started faith journaling, and I’ll also show you my faith journal and the pages I’ve created so far. Then, we’ll create a “How to Love Others” page, so you can see how easy it is to layer paints and inks and add notes, verses, or other writings to your page!

Supplies for Mixed Media Faith Journaling
When you’re faith journaling in a mixed media journal or sketchbook, the sky is the limit on what you can use. Paints, markers, ink, stamps, pencils, pens… pretty much anything. Below are the specific supplies I used for this page (and the journal itself):
- Ohuhu Mixed Media Pad (mine is 8.3″x8.3″, but it comes in two other sizes as well)
- Distress Ink (I used pink and red ones)
- Blender sponges (for blending the ink; also used this to apply paint)
- Folk Art acrylic paint (for this page, I used a light pink, and white)
- Golden acrylic glazing liquid (to thin the paint)
- Tim Holtz flourish stencil
- Altenew ink pads (Obsidian and Antique Gold)
- Creative Worship Stamps “Texture Tiles 1” stamp set

Remember, there is no right or wrong way to journal! With Bible journaling or faith journaling, use the supplies you prefer or what you already have on hand. Pray about it, study God’s Word, and journal in a way that helps you learn, process, and grow in Christ.
