Think you need a lot of supplies for Bible journaling? Actually, you can get by with very few… in this case, only one! Follow along with me, as we create a “fishers of people” page on Luke 5:1-11, using ONLY colored pencils.

If you know me, you know I LOVE to collect art supplies. I have plenty of paints, inks, stamps, and supplies galore, that I enjoy using in my Bible journaling (as well as other crafts).
BUT, sometimes less can be more! Whether you have limited space or a limited budget, or you just want to be challenged to see what you can do with a single art supply… it turns out, you can do a lot.
Especially when it comes to COLORED PENCILS! I’m always telling people, all you really need to get started Bible journaling, is a Bible and some colored pencils. In my humble opinion, colored pencils are the most versatile art supply you can own!
There are so many creative ways to use colored pencils, even in ways you wouldn’t expect (like using them as highlighters).
Creating An Entire Bible Journaling Page With Only Colored Pencils
So, let’s jump in and see what we can come up with, shall we? Even if you’re not “artistic”, as long as you can draw basic shapes and lines, you’re limited only by your imagination.
For the passage of Luke 5:1-11, Jesus called some of His first disciples, saying “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” (Luke 5:10, NIV) And of course, the disciples would learn to do just that… to spread the love of Christ, preach the gospel, and bring more people into God’s Kingdom as believers.
But, what does it mean for us in these modern times, to be fishers of people? Watch the video below, to follow along with the process of creating this page, and see what we can learn about this important topic.
Supplies
These are a few of my favorite colored pencils and accessories…
- Prismacolor Premier colored pencils (these are the ones I used in the video; I have the set of 72 colors)
- Arteza colored pencils (I also love these; I have a smaller set of 48, and use them a lot for travel and at home too)
- Vanish eraser (for erasing pencil lines before coloring)
Hot Coloring Tips!
- To create a nice, uniform ‘ichthus’ (fish) shape for this page, I folded a 3″x5″ index card into quarters (fold in half, then fold in half again). Then I used scissors to cut the long football-like shape that would become the inside of the ichthus. (See video).
- I filled in my ichthus/fish with swirling lines and water droplets, to give it that fish-jumping-out-of-water look. But you could embellish yours in a totally different way, if you like.
- For the title and notes, I chose the easiest route, and just wrote them in my own handwriting. But you could always use alpha stamps or hand lettering techniques, as I sometimes do in other Bible journaling pages.
How to Be Fishers of People
What lessons would you take away from Jesus’ ministry as a whole, that tells us how to be ‘fishers of people’? These are the points I arrived at (which I elaborate on more in the video).
- Being fishers of people, means sharing the gospel message of Jesus with them (kind of like casting a net or hook to catch fish).
- Like fishing, there are many ways to go about it (with words, deeds, face to face, through writing, gifts, etc.)
- Like fishing, if takes time and persistence (keep planting seeds, sharing, loving people, etc., even when your ‘net’ comes up empty).
- Like with fishing, it takes care and skill, to approach people with kindness, meeting them where they’re at (don’t scare the ‘fish’ away by being unkind or judgmental).
