I just love how God’s Word testifies to so many things we face in life! Got fears? The Scriptures tell us so many times to not be afraid, that God is with us (Joshua 1:9, Isaiah 41:10). Is your faith faltering? There are so many Scriptures that speak about clinging to God in faith (Hebrews 11:6), overcoming doubts (John 20:24-29), and so forth.

And likewise, if you’ve ever questioned the power of the Word of God, it’s truthfulness, or just how important it is to your walk with God, you can find those answers in the Bible too.

Even the answer to a simple question like, “Why is the Bible called the Word of God?” can be found in Scripture. (More on that answer in the next section…)

Seriously, there are so many Bible verses about the Word of God itself! Surely our Heavenly Father knew we would need these reminders of how supremely powerful and important His Word is. He knew we would have moments of doubt, or drifting, or just forgetting to study the Scriptures. He knew we would need the encouragement.

What does the Bible say about the Word of God?

In a nutshell, the Bible says that the Word of God is all about JESUS CHRIST. The whole Bible tells the story of God’s creation, man’s sinfulness and rebellion against God, and God’s desire to bring us back to a healthy relationship with Him. And of course, that all leads up to God’s own Son paying the price for our sins, so we could have eternal life (John 3:16). Jesus was God’s plan all along!

John 1:1 actually refers to Jesus as “The Word”. And I’m sure a Bible scholar or theologian could unpack the meaning of that in-depth, but here’s my basic interpretation: Jesus is called “The Word” because His sacrifice on the cross is the foundation of the whole Bible. The Old Testament leads up to it, prophesies about it, and so forth. The four gospels tell us about Jesus’ actual life ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection. And the rest of New Testament tells of the history of the early Christian church, and instructs us on how to live as followers of Christ—how to respond appropriately to God’s amazing gift of salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life.

So essentially, the Bible is called the Word of God, because it’s God’s message to us about Jesus—The Word! (Okay, so maybe that’s still a little hard to wrap your head around… in which case, just remember this one simple truth: God’s Word is all about JESUS!)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,

without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,

so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

The instructions of the LORD are perfect,
reviving the soul.

making wise the simple.
The commandments of the LORD are right,

giving insight for living.

lasting forever.

And this is the word that was preached to you.

2 Timothy 3:16

Depending on The Word of God

What a wonderful gift it is, that we can depend on God! As Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not like humans that he should lie”; humans may be fickle, but God is trustworthy and good. This next batch of Bible verses about God’s Word celebrates just how much we can depend on the Scriptures to teach and guide us through life.

15) Psalm 119:105 (NIV)
Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.

16) Psalm 1:2-3 (NLT)
But they delight in the law of the LORD,
meditating on it day and night.
They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
bearing fruit each season.
Their leaves never wither,
and they prosper in all they do.

17) Psalm 56:4 (NIV)
In God, whose word I praise—
in God I trust and am not afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?

18) Matthew 4:4 (NIV)
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Applying the Word of God in Our Lives

Finally, we come to this most important point: What good is it to read Scripture, unless we actually do what it says? These Bible verses about the Word of God call us to action.

19) Deuteronomy 11:18-20 (NIV)
Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates

20) Colossians 3:16 (NIV)
Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

21) 1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NIV)
And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.

22) Ephesians 6:13-17 (NIV)
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

23) Psalm 119:9-11 (NIV)
How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.
I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.

24) Matthew 7:24-26 (NIV)
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.”

25) James 1:22 (NLT)
But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.

*MIC DROP, Y’ALL* James just said it all with that last verse! If you and I take only one thing away from these Bible verses about the Word of God, let it be this: To do what it says.

I pray that every day, you will study God’s Word with an earnest desire to know Him better, to know His will for your life, and to follow His instructions. We are each a work in progress, being perfected day by day through the transforming power of the Word of God.

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
Philippians 1:6 (NLT)
