I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to feel stressed out. It’s JUST. NOT. FUN.
But, inevitably, there are times when stress and worry are unavoidable. It could be just a tough day, or a stressful time of year, or a worrisome season of life… for me right now, it’s just the end of year holiday season with too many activities and things I feel obligated to do (plus some other things piled on top not related to the holidays!)
What’s that stress for you at this moment? My friend, whatever it is, don’t forget that God is with you!
When you look at what the Bible says about stress and worry, you’ll find so many places where it says “do not fear”, “be strong and courageous”, “take heart”, and so many other ways of God telling us “Don’t worry…I’ve got this!”.
Clearly our Father in heaven knew that we would have some difficulties, and that we would often freak out, and forget that He’s there for us! So, He gave us these Bible verses to calm anxiety and to reassure us of His presence.
27 Calming Bible Verses to Ease Your Stress
These 27 calming Bible verses are just the tip of the iceberg. I encourage you to keep seeking God in His Word beyond these verses, to discover all the ways He cares for (and carries!) you through the ups and downs of life.
That being said, I’ve curated this list of Bible verses about stress and worry into three distinct categories, which you’ll find below. Let’s just call this the three-pronged approach to easing stress: 1) remember that God’s got this, 2) give your burdens to Him, and 3) pray some soothing Scriptures over yourself.
1) Bible Verses About God’s Sovereignty Over Your Situation
This first grouping of calming Bible verses is all about who God is, and how He cares for you!
This is what helps me most on stressful days: simply remembering that God is in control…even when my life seems like a mess! As you read these Bible verses about staying calm and trusting God, take comfort in the fact that He holds your life in His hands, and He is FOR you and not against you.
1) Romans 8:28 (NIV)
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
2) Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. ”
3) Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)
In their hearts humans plan their course,
but the LORD establishes their steps.
4) Isaiah 40:30-31 (NIV)
Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.
5) Psalm 103:1-5 (NIV)
Praise the LORD, my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the LORD, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—
who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6) Hebrews 13:6 (NIV)
So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?”
7) John 16:33 (NIV)
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
8) Philippians 4:19 (NIV)
And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
9) Psalm 34:17-19 (NLT)
The LORD hears his people when they call to him for help.
He rescues them from all their troubles.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted;
he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
The righteous person faces many troubles,
but the LORD comes to the rescue each time.
10) Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
11) 2 Corinthians 4:7-9 (NIV)
But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
2) Bible Verses About How to Respond to Stress and Worry
This next category of calming Bible verses is filled with good wisdom and instruction for stressful times. This is what the Bible says about anxiety and worry, and how we should cope with it.
Here, you’ll see Bible verses about worrying about tomorrow, what to do when you feel weary and burdened, what kind of attitude you should have in times of trial, and much more…
12) Philppians 4:6-7 (NLT)
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
13) James 1:2-4 (NIV)
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
14) 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
15) Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
16) Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
17) Matthew 6:34 (NIV)
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
18) Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
19) Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NIV)
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD,
whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”
20) Habakkuk 3:17-19 (NIV)
Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the LORD,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.
The Sovereign LORD is my strength;
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to tread on the heights.
21) Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)

all who trust in you,
all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
22) John 14:27 (AMP)

23) Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
24) Psalm 55:22 (NIV)
Cast your cares on the LORD
and he will sustain you;
he will never let
the righteous be shaken.
3) Bible Verses to Pray Over Yourself
And finally, these last few calming Bible verses are great ones to pray back to God, as you turn over your cares and concerns to Him and learn to trust Him more and more with whatever stresses you’re dealing with.
Praying the Scriptures (even out loud!) is a powerful way you can use those Bible verses to ease stress. In the process of praying, you’re not only soothing your soul with God’s Word, but also praising God for His faithfulness, and showing Him that you’re waiting patiently and trusting Him to help you.
25) Psalm 94:18-19 (NIV)
When I said, “My foot is slipping,”
your unfailing love, LORD, supported me.
When anxiety was great within me,
your consolation brought me joy.
26) Psalm 23:1-3 (NIV)
The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
27) Psalm 4:8 (NIV)
In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, LORD,
make me dwell in safety.
So, in all these soothing Scriptures, what is the most uplifting Bible verse? It’s so hard to pick just one, right? But personally, I always go back to Romans 8:28, which says that God works all things for the good of those who love Him. It tells me that I can trust God with all the details of my life, and I don’t need to worry.
Which of these calming Bible verses brings YOU the most comfort and peace? My prayer for you, is that no matter what’s going on in your life, you can surrender those burdens to your Heavenly Father, and trust Him to work it all for your good. ❤️

Eleanor, thank you so much for the encouragement! I am so blessed and humbled to be of service in God’s Kingdom. So glad I could help in some small way. 💗
Barbara, I have just come across your site! It is very helpful as a believer. There is so much to enjoy and to help us in our journey as believers. I can relate a lot to illness too as I have been un well for many years but God blesses me every day. I would love to have a site of my own for believers as they are needed. I am a crafter also and make cards, gifts for family & friends. God had been showing me so much through that as I do Christian crafts as well! I feel he is leading me to do more with my crafts and love for him. Have tried to even write out ideas such as Bible Journalling,verses, crafts to make a site but not quite sure just yet! Thankyou for your wonderful site and story. Who can be against us when God is for us? I have to ask God to bless Pinterest and your site in my prayers as that is how I got here! 😃May God Bless your wonderful work! P.S just letting you know I could not open the E-Book on my mobile with Adobe but I will try on my laptop as it might work on it? Looking forward to it!
Thank you Debbyanne! Your kind words and prayers do mean a lot to me. I am blessed to be able to share as I do, and even more blessed and humbled that God uses my little blog for His good. Regarding the e-book, I do hope you were able to open it, but I have sent you an email to troubleshoot that if needed. 🙂
