Here it is, y’all. My WORD OF THE YEAR for 2020! I hope this inspires you, to set good goals, and rely on God to help you on your journey.

I can’t believe we’re already into the second week of 2020! Where did the time go??? I know, so cliché right?
But no kidding, this first week of 2020 has been so crazy, it just felt like it went by in a flash. Between my day job, leading (and participating in!) the Bible Journaling Challenge, and running into technical snafus (printer problems and so forth), it’s just gone by SO fast.
I actually started writing this post before the new year, and I’m just now finishing it.
How has your 2020 been so far? I hope you’ve had lots of successes, even if they’re only small ones! And I hope you can see how blessed you truly are, no matter what’s going on in your life at the moment.
You’re looking at a brand new year! What will you do with it? How do you hope God will grow you in 2020?
My 2020 Word of the Year: ABIDE
As I mentioned in my previous post on Five Ideas for New Years Resolutions, I love choosing a word to live by for the new year.
God has grown me so much in recent years. But, as 2019 has come to a close, I’ve noticed some areas that I’m slacking off in. My morning prayer habit tends to get forgotten about on days when I’m rushing to get ready for work. And in general, I know that I haven’t been depending on God as much as I should. It’s so easy to get caught up in everyday life, and take control of everything myself, you know?
So, for 2020, my word is going to be ABIDE. As in, abide in Jesus. Rely on, spend more time with, be constantly connected to, rest in, and just ABIDE in my Savior. My goal is to stop running out ahead (like a kid running into the street), and instead stay hand-in-hand with God. I admit, I do have a bad habit of getting so absorbed in my work (or whatever is on my to-do list), that I fail to stop and ask God for help and guidance. So, for this year, I’m hoping to get better about that!
And as per my usual method, I created an acronym to help me remember, and to flesh out exactly what I’m intending to DO in 2020.
A.B.I.D.E. in Jesus
In order to ABIDE in Jesus this year, it starts with always keeping my morning prayer time. Even if I only have five minutes to pray on busier mornings, the point is to spend uninterrupted time with God, every single morning.
Always keep my morning appointment with God.
Become more attentive to the Holy Spirit’s leading.
Imitate Jesus, by loving each and every person where they’re at.
Devote myself to memorizing two new Scripture verses each month.
Excellence in all things.***
***And this last one has to do with a book I recently read, Master of One. In a nutshell, it’s about becoming excellent at what we do (work, family, or whatever we’re called to do in life), as a means of glorifying God and helping others. The book comes out January 21st, and I was fortunate to receive an advance copy. Look for my review here on the blog in a few weeks!
If you’d like to do a similar acronym for your word of the year, I recommend just sitting down with a piece of paper and pen, to brainstorm all the words you can think of for each letter. Write them down, pray about it, and look for the ones that really speak to you.
It took me about a week to finalize my acronym…it definitely didn’t come to me all at once, or overnight. So if you do this with your own word of the year, don’t rush it. Be patient with the process.
What’s your word for 2020? (Or Bible verse, theme, or focus area)? Whatever it is, I pray that God will grow you tremendously in 2020, and that you have plenty to celebrate and be grateful for!
