Have you ever felt weak, weary, or just downtrodden in life? Or perhaps you feel that way all the time?

If you have, I sure empathize with you and send hugs in solidarity. 💕🥹

My life with narcolepsy has never been easy, and I’ve relied upon verses like 2 Corinthians 12:9 to keep up my spirits and point myself back to God. Compound that with additional health struggles and chronic pain of the last five years or so, and it’s enough to drag a person down physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually.

Which is why I’ve always been fond of the words in Isaiah 40:28-31, which says that God gives strength to the weak. What a promise to cling to and believe for, when life knocks us down!

So, I’m very pleased to bring you this new Bible journaling tutorial, based on this uplifting passage from Isaiah. May it be a balm to your weary soul, and a boost for your spirit.

Isaiah 40:28-31 ~ The Lord Gives Strength to the Weak ~ Bible Journaling

You might notice in this video (and let’s face it, all my videos 🫣) that I’m not the most clear spoken person. I swear I can literally hear the tiredness in my voice when I play the audio recordings back again, and sometimes I have difficulty getting my thoughts across in a way that makes sense. It’s so frustrating.

But, I’m always grateful to God that I’m still able to do this for you, and I hope you find value in it! Enjoy the video Bible journaling process below, and also, the supplies I used and full instructions you can follow along with are listed further down in this post if you need them.

Supplies:

These are the Bible, tools, and art mediums I used in creating this Isaiah 40:28-31 journaling page! Everything is listed pretty much in the same order that I used them in the video. As always, you’re welcome to follow along with similar materials, or just use what you already have. Creative substitutions can be made, for example, if you don’t have pearl metallic paint, just use plain white acrylic paint. Or, if you don’t have Paint It cards, just apply the paints with brush instead.

Instructions:

I encourage you to follow God’s leading, use your creativity, and put your own spin on this Isaiah 40:28-31 Bible journaling page. However, if you’d like to follow along with the same/similar steps that I took, here they are for your convenience:

  1. FIRST OF ALL: If you’re using a regular Bible like this one, don’t forget to prep your page with gesso before beginning! This essential step helps protect and strengthen the Bible paper, making it able to handle wet paint, ink, and so forth. (The Illustrating Bible is the only Bible I know of that doesn’t require page prep).
  2. Begin by creating a colored background for your page. I used Gelatos for this, but you could use other things like colored pencils, or even Inktense pencils, to do this. (Leave the margin lighter colored, which will make the next step more effective).
  3. Once your background color is dry, spread some acrylic paint over your page margin to create a brighter backdrop for your artwork. I mixed mine with acrylic glazing liquid to make it thinner, but you could use water if necessary.
  4. After the paint has dried, now it’s time to add stamps, starting with an eagle! To echo verse 31 “They will soar high on wings like eagles”, I used a bird stamp from the Nature Silhouettes stamp set, to look like an eagle. Apply the bird stamp with brown ink, then use a white paint pen to make the head and tail of the eagle white. And, use an orange gel pen to add color to your eagle’s beak. (Alternatively, you could use white and orange paint and a fine detail brush for this part).
  5. Next, take The Lord is Near stamp set, and stamp “The Lord gives strength to the weak” and any other word stamps you desire. I used royal blue ink, but of course you can choose whatever color you like.
  6. Once you’ve finished adding words, pick out some star stamps or other embellishments to add to your page. I loved the stars from Creative Worship “My Creator” stamp set for this step. I used gold ink for the stars in the margin, and white ink for the stars around the Bible text. And in both cases, I went back over them with gold and white paint pens to make the stars show up better.
  7. Lastly, take a gel or paint pen, and outline/underline as much of the Isaiah 40 passage as you like. I used a white paint pen to outline verses 26-31, and a gold paint pen to underline verse 29. This would also be a great time to add more notes in the margin, do a verse map, or any other deeper study you want to do regarding this Scripture!
