I’ll never forget the story…
…I read it in an Upper Room daily devotional, about a man whose mother had a ministry of sending people birthday cards with encouraging words.
When his mother passed away, he arrived at his parents’ home to help his father prepare for the funeral. And there was a stack of birthday cards waiting to be mailed, which his mother had finished just before her death. Which just goes to show, how many birthday cards she might’ve sent out on a weekly or monthly basis!
At the funeral, the son asked for those who had received birthday cards from his mother to raise their hand… and nearly everyone in attendance did! His mothers’ ministry may have been relatively “small”, but it made a big impact.
I can only imagine how the words she wrote in those birthday cards must’ve lifted the spirits of those who received them. Who knows what each person was going through, and how a simple Bible verse or encouraging message could’ve made a big impact on their life?
Indeed, those little things can often make the biggest difference in someone’s life! Which brings us to these Bible verses for birthday cards…

These are the best Bible verses for birthday wishes I could find… verses to celebrate another year of life, to pass along wisdom, to pray blessings over them, and more!
There is something here for everyone, from birthday Bible verses for a friend, sister, or brother, to verses appropriate for a son or daughter. All you have to do, is pick the one(s) that are most fitting for the birthday person and their unique personality, season of life, challenges, etc.
1) 3 John 1:2 (NLT)
Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit.
What a perfect greeting for a friend who you haven’t seen in a while! The book of 3 John was a letter written from the Apostle John to his beloved co-worker Gaius, and provides this thoughtful introduction which would lend itself well to a birthday greeting.
2) Psalm 118:24 (ESV)
This is the day that the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Every day we’re alive and breathing is cause to rejoice… but especially on their birthday! 😉
3) James 1:17 (NIV)
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

From my mother’s womb you have been my God.

7) Matthew 10:29-31 (NIV)
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
If you want to communicate to your birthday girl or boy just how much God watches over them, this verse says it all.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Speaking of Bible verses for birthday blessings, this popular Scripture would be so appropriate for a young person hitting a milestone birthday (like 18, 21, or 30). Regardless of whether they have plans, or maybe they have no idea what comes next, this serves to remind them that God has good plans for their life.
10) Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

I do believe this is one of the best Bible verses for birthday wishes! It reminds them to shine brightly, as a unique and beloved child of God, pointing others to Him in the process.

What a beautiful promise God makes here! This verse would be especially uplifting to someone who is older, or even a “young” person who is hitting a major milestone like 40 or 50, and who is beginning to feel a little “old”.
24) 2 Corinthians 4:16 (NIV)
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
Again, as with the previous Scripture, this one is a great reminder that growing old is normal, but we needn’t lose heart over it. Even as their body may be declining, their spiritual wisdom and inner soul is growing and being renewed.

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
